The Tamiya F-4 Phantom II kits in 1/32nd scale are generally very good with relatively accurate configurations and few over-simplifications. But the outer wing pylons for the USAF versions are in the wrong location (slightly offset and to the rear), and incorrect in configuration.
is a fast-rising after-market resin supplier that has exploded onto the 32-scale scene like a flaming meteor, offering a wide and growing line of products from exhaust nozzles to cockpits to complete F-4B/N conversions, mostly around the iconic Phantom II. One of their newer releases is a set of two correct USN out wing pylons that more-closely reflect the real nature of the beast.
what you get
Inside a Ziploc baggie are two gray resin pylons. In addition, there is a crude, but effective template for moving the attachment holes for the pylons, which are too far aft and outboard than the real thing.
has come out of nowhere to offer a respectable and growing selection of resin improvements in 1/32nd scale in particular. Aeroscale has already reviewed the company's F-B/N resin conversion and cockpit
, and this review is a look at the new outer wing pylons. That's because the Tamiya Phantom kits give modelers no option for outboard ordnance. The kit presumes using the wing tanks supplied with the F-4J kits.
Those tanks were often used, but are placed incorrectly. And for modelers who want to add outer wing load-outs, this set is a must-have on aircraft that were using the center line tank.
The casting is sharp and crisp. The attachment points have been recast from the company's original set, but it's still a good idea to be careful when removing the units from their pour plugs. In any case, GT Resin
stands behind their products, and will replace any that break.
The template isn't hard to use, and the satisfaction of having the pylons in the correct position is significant to a stickler for detail like myself.
One of the advantages of a company like GT Resin
is bringing to the hobby things that don't exist. Modelers who want an accurate USN Phantom II build with outer wing pods, or just want their drop tanks properly-placed with want this set.
Thanks to GT Resin for providing this review sample. Be sure to mention you saw it reviewed on Aeroscale when ordering.
