IntroductionThis book is a little different from other Trackpad Publishing titles as it covers the story of the men and machines who were on the ground during this time period. The book covers many aspects associated with deploying armour to support the ISAF mission on Afghanistan, from the initial trials to ensure that the Leopard 2 would be suitable, to the end of the mission when the tanks were thoroughly cleaned prior to their return to Denmark.
ReviewDanish Leopards in Helmand by Thomas Antonsen hits 148 pages this A4 soft back book covers the deployment of the Leopard 2A5 belonging to the Danish Contingent. The book covers the time period from October 2007 to May 2017and this is reflected in each of the chapters from DANCON 4 to DANCON 17.
Each of the chapters covers one of the deployments and includes coverage of joint operations with the various nationalities that were deployed as part of the ISAF mission. Each of these chapters is full of interesting and anecdotal information. Each of the chapters is also littered with high quality photographs taken during each of the deployments by the Danish crews. They cover everything from the routine to the unusual, including the IED finds and the damage caused by IEDs to vehicles. The Epilogue pays tribute to all the Officers and Men who served with distinction with DANBAT. The Epilogue also contains a useful list of abbreviations and a glossary of the terms used within this title. There is a map and list of further reading for those who wish to investigate the Danish military further.
It should be noted that there is a list of sponsors for this book, this was arranged by the author Thomas Antonsen. The sponsors raised a total of 14,00DKK (Danish Kroner) - around £16400 - for the KFUM Soldiers Mission in Holstebro, and this money will benefit Danish Military veterans.
