Introduction
Building and Weathering the HO Scale Atlas 3-Stall Roundhouse is the first manual of the new Mike Ashey Publishing COMPREHENSIVE SERIES Model Railroad. This manual has 14 pages and 71 color photos in an A4 format. This unique publication is unique in format, too - loose leaf on quality paper. The pages are pre-punched to fit into a binder; a cover and title page are includes, as is a page of banners to identify the book.

Mike Ashey has been writing acclaimed modeling books since the late 1980s. Now he is entering the desktop publishing arena with his books and new titles. Let's examine why his books are so highly regarded.

Content
COMPREHENSIVE SERIES SCALE MODEL RAILROAD MANUAL is not a general how-to book. It focuses on a specific model, the HO scale Atlas 3-Stall Roundhouse. The manual is more of an expanded highly detailed instruction sheet for this model. Each page displays color photographs of the particular aspect of the assembly process with narrative captions. The tips and techniques he demonstrates are appropriate for models of any subject and most every medium. He even includes a page for notes.

Mr. Ashey takes the modeler through every step of the assembly and painting processes except for nipping the parts off the sprues. The first page shows the completed project and provides a summary of the kit and the tools and supplies he used to assemble it. That includes fixing problems and painting and weathering.

Next he takes us along the journey from parts to a fully assembled model. He provides and demonstrates tips and techniques as he narrates the processes. He also identifies problems with the models and how to fix them. In a couple of places in a humble way he even tattles on himself about mistakes he made. The text is thoroughly enjoyable.

Modelers from novice to masters can benefit from this publication.

Photographs
This is very much a graphical manual. Every page features at least one full color photograph. The photographs are shot over a pleasant blue background. Each one is in sharp focus and excellent exposure. They leave no doubt about what is happening in the process.

Conclusion
Building and Weathering the HO Scale Atlas 3-Stall Roundhouse is an impressive modeling publication. It punches far above its weight in terms of content verses price. Mr. Ashey presents a thorough guide through the process. The easy of purchase and storage is excellent.

The tips and techniques are useful for any modeling project. Buildings, tanks, ships, railroad cars, planes, figures - everything this tutorial touches upon are valid. I happily recommend this publication.
