IntroductionPilot WWI Camel is a new 1/48 figure from Plus Model, part of their series Aero Line. This resin kit is item AL4078. Plus Model also offers a German companion - AL4077, Pilot WWI. Albatros.
The FigureA very simple kit, Pilot WWI Camel consists of two parts - right arm with cigarette and the rest of the body. They are crisply cast in gray resin. I found no air pocks, mold seam lines, sink holes, or flash.
The pose is relaxed with one hand in a jacket pocket, and one hand casually holding a fag.
Both parts arrived attached to their pour blocks. The pilot is cast with a thin supporting filling between the legs and two thin rods attaching that filling to the crotch. The support is easy to trim off.
The boots are cast firm to the pour block. Even though these boots have good sole detail, parting the feet from the block requires care.
A male/female connection to join the arm to the shoulder suffers with a cast rod across the dimple; I could not carve it away and had to drill it out.
DetailPlus Model's sculptors crafted deep and distinct relief, folds and recesses in the uniform kit, and face and hands without looking like a caricature. A deep undercut gives depth to the face and helmet edge.
Flying kit in a helmet with goggles, a scarf, ashort leather jacket, "Sam Brown belt," trousers, and high boots.
Instructions, Decals, and Painting GuideNone, except for a color portrait of the figure.
ConclusionPLus Model has sculpted and cast an excellent 1/48 figure for a United Kingdom Royal Flying Corps pilot. While the kit is titled with "Camel," I see nothing in particular that equates this figure with the famous Sopwith.
The figure features high detail and crisp casting. The dimple in the shoulder has excess resin across it that prevents the arm from attaching unless the modeler drills it out.
Pilot WWI Camel will make a great companion to any RFC Great War aircraft. It also looks good as a stand-alone figure. Recommended.
