about the figure

In 1852; Camillo Benso of Cavour became the Prime minister of the Savoy Kingdom, precursor of Italy as an independent country. The strategy of his domestic policy turned towards economic and industrial development. As regards the foreign policy ; his main concern was that of bringing the Italian question to the attention of the European Powers. The opportunity came with the out brake of the hostilities between Turkey and Russia in the Crimean. On the 26 January 1855; Cavour formed an alliance with England and France against Russia with the military agreement of participating in the conflict by providing a contingent of Sardinian troops. Thus, 15,000 men headed for the Crimean peninsula under the command of General Alfonso Ferrero della Marmora and participated in both the Battle of Cernaia and the Siege of Sevastopoli, the powerful stronghold which resisted to the Anglo-French-Piedmontese troops for about a year.
(This paragraph is taken from the historical note provided in the kit.)

The figure represents an infantry subaltern of the Sardinian Piedmont troops in May 1855, during Crimean War. For who may not be familiar to the word; Subaltern means low-ranking military officer, higher than a NCO, who has a lot of operational responsibility but almost no autonomy.

parts

The figure is sculpted by Russian master sculptor Victor Konnov and made up of 6 white metal parts. All parts are cast clean and crisp in very good details. No need for a serious clean up, filling or sanding.

The main part is torso with head, right arm and left leg. He wears a blue-greyish front- button cloth great coat-Capote with a round edged collar that could be turned up. There are two paralel cuffbands on each sleeves. A crosswise thick sash is worn on the right shoulder and tied on the left waist. He carries a white thick leather belt with a decorated brass buckle. He wears loose fatigue trousers with white lining and knee height leather boots.

Facial details like chin puff beard, handlebar moustache, strap of kepi under chin are well presented. Cloth folds, cuffbands, buttons and symbol on the belt buckle, straps of the scabbard are well defined.

Other parts are;

  • Right leg : Nice cloth folds on trousers and it makes a good fit to the main part .

  • Right hand : Posed to raise the sabre and wearing gloves. The Sabre is a single-edged sword with slight curve and large hand guard, covering the knuckles of the hand as well as the thumb and forefinger.

  • Left arm : Posed to grab the scabbard and makes a good fit to main part.

  • Kepi : He wears French sytle military Kepi - a smal cap with a flat circular top and a visor. In this version kepi is covered with a cloth and neckguard behind as the French Foreign Legionaries. The round part on the front top is to show rank and insignia.

    Thanks for the review, bro Sheesh you added those pics quickly... I was just reading the review without pics in the staging area and the next thing it's live Nice figure, but as you say, pity about the base - it really compliments the figure. Once again, great review. Rudi
