As some of you may have noticed Sam hasn't been around for a while. Unfortunately as some of you know she has been having bought's of depression over the last year. She was starting to get even better until a recent letter was published in the magazine she does the reviews for, being negative towards her work. For those of you that get SAMI it was in the May issue and it was the letter about the Trumpeter 1/48 Mig 3 (which she started and finished in a week and a half, ready for the Telford comp). The comments about lack of detailed researching has upset her to say the least, to the point where she doesn't want to do anything. The editor and several writers stuck up for reviewers in general at the end of the letter which was good.

Sam always felt like she was fighting a losing battle and this letter seems to prove it. After a conversation last night Sam is seriously contemplating giving up modelling, she hasn't sat at the bench and picked anything up in over a month. Im really hoping Sam doesn't give up and snaps out of this and comes back better than ever. Im thinking of writing a letter (shame I havn't got his home address) saying exactly what the consequences of his rivot counting arrogance has had. Then again the bloke thinks Airfix produced a Mig 3?????

Im sure we all hope Sam gets over this and is back soon. Just thought you should all be aware of the current situation.

SAM,
Get to the bench and chop some plastic --even it its only making a box----the "twit" who can only be negative is a moron that has failed to realise the pleasure gained from modelling .....
Just ignore it --if you enjoyed the build thats what is important ......didn't like your build --- must be a "numpty" ...............mind you lots of people don't like my stuff 'cause its"WIERD"....but I don't hear half thecomments as "They "won't speak direcly to me ---GOOD!
Go build another kit and have it printed up and if the"Ignoramous " has the nerve to comment again --then ask for their work to be submitted for comment by readers.........
that should do it
Now I am waiting to see a model on here from you soon

i'd just like to echo what derek and steve said sam, and it seems to me that the letters pages in modelling mags, have at least one letter from a J.M.N. (joyless modelling nazi)
we all build stuff that can be critisised (me especially!) but the fact i used crown emulsion on a recent build when i ran out of RAF sky isn't life threatening.
and the (almost) finished kit looks fine, even with its raised panel lines.
chin up sam!

Samantha,
Remember the old childhood adage...."sticks and stones can break your bones but words can never hurt you"
Whoever the person was that wrote this 'letter' in all probability has never built a kit nor written an article or review. Besides, this is a total stranger. What he says or thinks have no bearing on anything in your life.
You have way too many friends on this site alone that appreciate your work and from what I've seen you have too much talent as a model builder to just give it up. I know that you don't know me from Adam as I build dioramas(generally armor related) and your predominantly in the A/C realm, but I have read and followed your postings (okay, maybe I'm a closet A/C guy )
Don't let one a.....hole get the best of you. You are part of the Armorama family and we won't let some small minded SOB take you out of the picture. Show this punk that he is completely out of his league and continue with your hobby. Didn't you start building because it was fun?? Don't let one guy's stupid letter steal away your fun.

Hi Sam,

I don’t know you and I’ve no idea if I’ve ever seen anything you’ve built. Perhaps I have.

You will only end up in trouble if you really take to heart what people who don't care about you or what you have accomplished have to say.

I've built some models and had the cheek to post them here despite some of the superb work I've seen. I've had some criticisms but usually they were all posted with good intent… i.e. To help me learn how to do things better. Steve (Barv) being one of the best.

People are not infallible, neither me, you, nor anyone else. It’s something I struggle a lot with in my job.

Don’t worry about it.

At a show I bought a 1/32 Revell US Phantom and mentioned that I’d like to build it as an RAF Phantom.

One bloke said “Hah, never!”

Another said “Hmm… Possible!” Then to my surprise, unasked, he bought and sent me some decals and other bits and pieces and said “Here mate, see how you get on.” (Thanks Dugald). He was just being friendly, helpful and interested in seeing what I would produce… Accurate or not.

Others that I’ve met on this site from other nations have sent me bits and bobs that have stunned me. (Thanks Erik and Marcel).

Not everyone is out to get you. But some will if you let them.

Get building again. Post the pics here and (generally) we’ll let you know what we honestly think.

Enjoy the hobby.

Hi ya Sam
Don,t let this moron get you down, asBarv said ,chop up some plastic and make box (coffin shaped) put a little figure in it just like him and bury the b*****d,just cos you make some small mistake,s on a plane, vehicle or figure show,s that you are only human, you can do all the reseach in the world ,and all the detailing you can put on somthing , and sod,s law will turn up somthing you have missed and it,s always from someone like this moron who spends more time criticising other people work than actually building things.
Even the big boys get it wrong .Sam please carry on building and painting models, can i just tell you somthing, my daughter was home from uni the other week and i showed her some of the work you do on fantasy figure,s ,she just loves drawing and painting them and now wants to do some ,so that,s one young lady you,ve inspired
Don,t let him get you down .I went through a depression about three years ago and did,nt want to do any modelling or painting but friends and family helped me back, just like your Armorama family will with you
Here,s a good laugh for you Sam my latest camo scheme is black/blue and any other colour you care to mention ,as i fell out of the loft on friday looking for a kit (swear someone took the bricks from under me ladder) so i,m typing this very slowely and trying to find a place that dose,nt hurt or ache
As the saying goes ,pick yourself up,dust yourself down and start all over again
From a very sore scouscer Barry
p.s don,t know his car reg do you

Hi Sam

I don't know you but i just had a look at your gallery photo's.Please don't give up now your'e too good for that.Idiots like that guy seem to forget it's a hobby that we are supposed to enjoy. If he wants to be over critical he should watch the history channel. It would probably drive him insane listening to some of their experts.

Sam,
just adding my bit of support, and remember, you are the one who does the hours of building, you are the one with the skills to make a bunch of plastic come alive with paint. He has no other 'skill', than to critisise others. That takes no skill at all.
It's like a theatre critic, they will critisise a dancer, without ever having experienced the countless repetitive hours of practise and agonising pain... And usually, they are just jealous...

Hang in there Sam,

Henk

Hi Sam

I'm going to echo what everybody else has said, don't give up a passion and something that you are good at just because some mind less idiot has questioned your work. For the one guy that does not like what you do there will be twenty who do, and it the ones who appreciate your reviews and work who's opinons you should be intrested in.

so chin up, and glue some plastic ..........................you know you want to

cheers

Keith

I echo what the others have said, don't give up just because some rivet counter with nothing better to do then belittle your great work gets his knickers in a twist, and I bet my last pound that he has never completed a model.
As a consolation, after Courtney (and she will never forgive you if you walk away lol), see your anime/manga/sci fi figures, at various shows, you have inspired her to build and paint figures herself. I will try and get Courtney to reply to this thread as well (if I can get her off the Xbox long enough ).

Hi Sam, please don't quit modelling. You've really inspired me to start building anime figures (and I could really use some help!). I'm not just building them but I'm watching them as well (I've turned into an anime freak lol).
I sometimes get picked on at school for various reasons and what helps me through the day is to keep saying to myself: "ignore the bad comments and thank people for the good ones!"
Just hang in there.

Hi ,
Thank you for all your kind words of encouragement (and Bigskips vocal email), it has all been taken in. I have sat down and thought long and hard about the whole situation aswell. Unfortunately this has been coming for a while but the idiots letter finally pushed me that bit too far (haven't been the same since the start of last year, most of you know what happened in previous job). Its really hard for me to get enthused at the moment but I am trying to work on it but dont want to force myself too much. Might have a potter at the weekend and see how I feel with some Tamiya shake and bake kits that I've got. Think if I see resin or complex kits I might just run and hide .

I know you are all right about this idiot and how I shouldn't let it get too me but that is abit easier said than done at the minute. At least I now realise some people do like my work which is positive and nice to know. So once again thank you for all the kind words and support. Hope to have some more model updates for you soon.

I did have a quick blast with the airbrush tonight but it was on a model horse I fancied repainting.

Hey Sam,

I read the Al's concerned posting about your recent review experience, and I just wanted to add my words of encouragement - I hope they come out as such

I think we all have days like these. Here's a rant on my blog about it back in January: http://tarokstales.blogspot.com/2008/01/validating-ones-work.html

For what it's worth, I have read your reviews and articles here on Kitmaker, as well The Basement, and let me tell you that both as the HF ME and in my personal capacity I find your writing a treat, and your articles a pleasure to edit.

You can submit content to HF any time!!!

Hang in there girl!
