Well, i can't be the only Pratchett fan on the Kitmaker network! I had to buy this when it came out, but wondered if i'd ever really build it...it looks a bit hard. But then i noticed the new paper models forum on here and pulled it out for a look. And i've decided to make a start...it will make a nice filler project for when i'm experiencing down time on my main projects. Useful as i can build this on the lounge room table instead of taking up model bench space.
Now that i've started this i've suddenly realised two facts:1. this is going to take a LONG time to finish. 2. When it IS finished (in about 2 years) it's going to be HUGE!!! I have no idea where i'll put it.
I made a start on the first building, the Library. Unfortunately it doesn't come with a Monkey. I now have a very healthy respect for the people that build these paper models all the time! They are not as easy as they appear.
Library pieces. The first 10 sheets of parts. There are, all up, 125 pages of parts.
During the Library build i've been learning and experimenting a bit. Especially with glue. I've tried glue sticks, UHU clear glue and PVA. Eventually have started using Loctite 401 Cyano glue for most parts because it sets instantly and doesn't wet the paper and wrinkle it. BUT it does have nasty habit of sticking your fingers to inconvient pieces of Unseen University. For large pieces needing adjustment i'm still using the UHU clear stuff.
And the Library finished. It's probably the easiest building in the entire University....and for me that is a scary thought, because it wasn't that easy! Some touchups are needed along a few "score" lines where the printing tends to come away and show as white paper (those white lines you can see in some pics along bends). I'll wait until the entire campus is done then go back and do paint touchups all at once.
Well it's been a bit of fun so far. More to come over time.
