Jim S and I have removed a lot of spam accounts of late with Jim having removed 4,500 in the last few days. I hope that gives you some indication of the task we are up against. As regards checking posts by new members; sure it would work but we do not have the time for that task as it would take an age to keep on top of.

Thanks Darren. I mentioned the "first post moderation" thing because you're already putting a lot of effort into tracking & killing spam once it's already happened. If the idea of a constant reactive monitoring service for noobs is out of the question, perhaps instead we can ask newbies to send in a separate "why I'm interested" text as part of the sign-up process, to be reviewed before getting final approval? Still a bit of work, but at least it can be done in batches at a convenient time...

What would be nice is if we had a real "Hacker" in our bunch that could make some code that would go back to these bozos and fry the boxes these are coming from. They might take notice once it starts hurting their wallet.
Alternatively, wouldn't it be great to find out who's actually responsible then send a group of us from wherever they are to, as they say in the Mafia movies, "Deliver a message".

The vast majority of spam these days is sent from botnets; zombied computers owned by innocent people all over the world who fell for a scam and opened a spam message which installed the zombie software without their knowledge. Even if we could nuke the computers the spam is coming from, all we'd be doing is hurting some poor innocent person somewhere, and the spammers would just move on to the next zombie in their network.
