Not Air National Guard but Army National Guard. There's a base very close to me with a vehicle depot. I'd love to be able to get some walkaround pictures of some the vehicles but I'm not sure if that's even possible and, if it is, how to ask to be able to do it. Is this even a possibility and if so, who would I contact and what would I even say?

Hey Michael,

You should probably start with the Public Affairs Office as a first step. Also, check to see if they have an open house any time soon. Open houses are generally aimed at recruitment but they may have a couple of pieces of equipment/vehicles out that you may be able to access (with permission of course!)
Good luck.
Cheers,
Rick

Thank you. I guess I can get to Public Affairs from the ANG website?

I had called the Public Affairs and unfortunately, for me, it can't be done.

Things are probably different today, but way back when, my local NG facility had at least one person on-duty Monday - Friday, and you could just walk in and chat. If that's still the case, maybe that person can direct you to someone who can accomodate your request. Plus, sometimes, a few mechanics would be around, and the gates to the motor pool would be open,so maybe if that's the case, you can just go directly to the motor pool, find someone there, explain what you want to do, and maybe they'll let you look around. But again, don't be surprised if you get turned down. The point is, instead of going "through channels", you can just do a bottom-up request, which might be approved.

Good luck!

Find out the unit (s) in the armory. Call them direct. The full-time NCOs can be talked into letting you in to look at stuff. Especially if you offer to build something for them. Public Affairs can be pretty stingy because they are usually concerned with community relations and media outlets not hobbyists looking to fulfill their obscure passion to document things they take for granted as a part of the job.

See also if you can get a hold of the New York National Guard unit historians. You find the history section a lot of times they're into the old stuff and can get you in to see the new stuff. Then there's trolling the local model clubs, they may already have the connections to get you in.

I actually had gone through public affairs. I was able to talk to the local base commander or someone from the local base but unfortunately, because it was a personal project, they couldn't agree to it. If it was a school project they might have been able to allow me in. I will try to find out the unit historian. Unfortunately I'm not a good enough builder yet to consider even building a base commander a project... Yet.

For now, though, there's no need because the project in question is finished for the most part.
