I was curious if someone could please recommend some basic weathering products in the mig line for the king tiger I'm currently building. I've always used oil paints & chalk pastels in the past, but I'd like to order some pigments and washes that I've heard so much about & try those out. I've been looking at the mig products on scalehobbyist, but there's so many I really don't know what to choose. I mainly build german armor in 3 tone mid/ late war camo.

The filter for the 3 tone camo would be appropiate.Perhaps a brown wash.And various pigments,such as light or dark mud,Europe dust,there is no exact answer,it's up to your taste or the models setting.Do they have an appropiate set that would match your build.

I've considered a couple of different sets that they carry. I thought maybe I could hit all my bases by getting the summer dust set, muddy tracks set, and European earth set, along with the dark brown wash, and a couple rust colored pigments for my exhuasts. It's a Pandoras box for me once I start looking. Your suggestions have definitely helped me know I'm on the right track. My current build will be in a Normandy setting, but I've always liked a dusty Kursk type look.

I meant Ardennes for my current build. I don't know why I put Normandy. I didn't realize the error until I already posted it.

You might usefully consider looking at some contemporary colour photography of the area (the soil colour won't have changed since 1944!) or try aerial photography of the region via Google Earth etc to give you some idea of typical colours. You don't want red laterite, for example😉

Don't take the manufacturer's colour names too literally - they are in the business of selling you as many products as possible (which is fine - they are a business, after all) and you can probably make most of them yourself if you equip yourself with a sufficiently diverse range at outset.

I've given that some thought. That's why I'm hesitant to buy the sets. They seem to all be kind of redundant with the colors, products, etc. It's difficult having to order everything & not see it firsthand. I live in a rural area, so I'm sort of restricted to this option. I just gotta take the manufacturers word for it somewhat. That's why I've considered just getting a variety of light, med, & dark colored pigments, so that I can mix them for the appropriate hue. I just get stuck wondering whether I'll need the fixative, thinner, mud/dust effects, splashes, etc. they offer. If it's clever advertising, then they've done a good job.
