Would any one be able to tell me what color the Royal Navy painted it's land based vehicles during W.W. 2. And would markings be like vehicles used by the Army? Tactical, vehicle numbers, etc. I am gathering my needs list for a dio. with a 1/35th Vosper preparing for a mission (nose job) in which the loading of kayaks is going on with mission supplies ect. I would be grateful for any help you fellows could provide. Thanks in advance. Bob D.

That looks like a Champ, which was post-war.

I believe that the colours were as for army vehicles, although as they were less likely to be at the sharp end, I'd go with SCC2.

Unless someone knows better....

I posted simply for markings and the correct color, as it remained unchanged for some time post war. I also located a photo of it, as it appeared during WWII. However, the photo showed signs of fading.

Matt and Robert, thanks for the quick reply. Is SCC2 a military color code or a paint company color. I'm stepping into naval stuff which I am pretty ignorant of. I'll hazard a guess of green blue, more to the green side. Also, if the navy was trying not to draw attention to it self, such as loading for a black ops situation would they have omitted the white lettering. The dio. I'm going for is the loading of a Vosper out of Lerwick, Shetland around sundown, of commandos with kayaks and supplies for a nose job in Norway.

If they are loading a Vosper, it wouldn't matter whether or not they were unmarked. Just another ship being loaded, with equipment. Unmarked vehicles being utilized would only draw more attention. I believe the kayaks would rendezvous, with the larger craft offshore.

Hey Matt, using the Vosper to get the kayaks to a drop off point and the commandos would insert to the shore from there to do their job in occupied Norway. At least that's the story I would like to portray. Just joined the unfinished boat campaign so I've got till the end of the year to put this together. Better order my dual 20 nm.m. from shapeways if I'm sending her in harms way huh.

Most references that I have come across, depict kayaks being deployed by a plethora of submarines. I can't locate any period photos that show a kayak and RN vessel near each other. Never say "never". I can only help you try to work out how the commandos would go about staging such a mission. The kayaks, being the only part I can't figure out.

SCC2 (Standard Camouflage Colour 2) is a brown. Mike Starmer's model paint matches are at www.mafva.net and he is something of an authority on the subject.

Loading would take place inside a naval base so if a truck with a canvas-covered body arrived there it would be ignored by anyone outside (or at least not afforded special interest, as it could be carrying sacks of potatoes, sandbags or any kind of stores) and nobody outside the base would be around to observe the dock loading anyway, so no reason for the truck to be unmarked. In wartime pretty well everything is secret but there are lots of military vehicles around so the locals tend to get used to them as one looks much like another.

Submarines do seem to have been the usual transport but motor launches would also be an option. MTBs were somewhat specialised in their role (and needed for torpedo attacks) so rather less likely, I'd say.

I searched for SCC2 Royal Navy. While some RN vehicles did include a brown color, all had the blue.

November 1941 - A.C.I. 1559 is cancelled by A.C.I. 2202. With M.T.P. 20 still specified all top horizontal surfaces are to be S.C.C. 1A or if unavailable S.C.C. 14 (black). S.C.C. 2 to be used to restore faded tilts. Photographs and film show this in use with M.T.P. 20 bands. They also show M.T.P.46/ 4A pattern overlaying a sharp straight line between a dark top and medium sides. New tilts and hoods were now manufactured from canvas dyed to a near match for S.C.C. 2

Try a search on 'Royal Navy colours WW2'. First hit I got was a 2008 thread on HMVF which suggests Admiralty grey (not sure which one though, as there were several shades) or the usual Army colours (or blue up to 1941, which is probably before the OP's planned date).

Tactical vehicles (e.g. 30AU's) were obviously in the appropriate land service scheme.
