It is possible; whether it is good practice is another question.

Making the content of one site depending on the survival of another cna give troubles. Just look at the stress the photobucket issue is causing right now.

Depends on what is being linked. Some sites like PMMS disable direct image linking and rightly so because each forum topic view with a direct image link contributes to their total website traffic ($$$).
