Dear all,

Not sure if this is the right place to post, but hope somebody here can help me to do some research.

I'm trying to find out more about the wartime history of my girlfriends grandpa. He was in the 5th Guards Army as part of the 1st Ukrainian front from 1943 - 1945. He was a lieutanant in the 61st seperate chemical defense unit (not sure what type of unit - we think batallion). We know as well that he got decorated for his actions during the crossing of the river Neisse (German-Polish border) where he led a unit in front of the main forces to lay smoke screens to cover the advance, during which action they eliminated several defensive positions and captured a few German soldiers, and completed their mission of laying the smoke screen (we have the handwritten report - pretty cool)

Does anyone have any advise where we could find more details about this unit and their actions / route of advance during world war 2? We'd be very interested to learn more.

Thank you,
