I致e been posting my own effort for the Flattops campaign, the 1/2400 scale Ryujo, on a separate build log.
After a break following a couple of disasters, I知 back in the game - the ocean base has been repainted!

Robby,

Your little Corsair looks great! I'll have to try one of those egg kits - they do look like a lot of fun!

I couldn't find it either.

I will ask the administrator to set one up, I seem to remember it has to be done at that level.

Sorry, I'm once again stymied by this site's photo gallery...can someone link me to the Flattops campaign gallery??

It appears that there isn't one.

It is a curious looking beast, but rather fun non the less.

Curious indeed...more importantly, my wife said it was "really cute!!" which is more of a reaction than she gave any of my other builds. I think these egg-scales could be a good way to get her[/] to let [i]me to get our kid into model building...follow that?

Painting was pretty uneventful, aside from some overlooked overspray while laying down the yellow. The mask I made from the "Canopy Survival Kit" sheets mostly worked, but I think MicroMask would've been an easier application and tighter lines. But it cleaned up nicely overall, the eggplane is now complete, and it's a lot of fun to look at on the shelf!

1/Egg scale of LCDR Hedrick's F4U-1D operating from USS Bunker Hill (CV-17) off Okinawa, Feb 1945:

In addition to being curiously cute, these eggscales are very quick builds that let you focus more on the fundamentals of the hobby. And the AMS pressure is truly off since there's no way to rivet-count these, so just enjoy the process! And yes, there are eggships and eggtanks too...something for everyone I really enjoyed this eggscale stuff and would recommend other people try it out too, especially if you've been feeling stuck/unmotivated/obsessive with the hobby lately.

Thanks for the permission to come aboard

This is going to be a pretty laid-back build for me, as if the eggplane idea didn't get that message through...it's only about 30 pieces in all! I started off cleaning the major pieces, the fuselage and flight surfaces.

I worked in halves on the fuselage. Everything goes well enough together on each half individually. The only modification I made was to add a small sheet of plastic to act as a forward bulkhead. Otherwise you'd be able to see past the seat and clear into the egg's inside!

The halves had some sizable seams to work out when put together. Putty and my MicroMark sanding set were the order of the day. Primed, found imperfections, fixed them as best I could. This is SIGNIFICANTLY better than my seam fixes in builds past, but it's not perfect. You know, the Amish are said to intentionally put an imperfect stitch in every quilt and garment they make as a reminder that no mortal is perfect...so that's what I'm doing with this model good enough, better than before, but I can't be perfect!

Nice work with the shim, Gary. Fixes like that are not among the sexier modeling tasks, but they are essential for the visual consistency of a model that marks the superior build. That is to say, you are on the right track!

An update on my build. I found that one of the decks on the hull would not match the thickness of the one on the forward superstructure, so I had to fashion a shim.

The shim itself (Needs more trimming)

The front superstructure placed on top to show why I needed to put a shim in,

...what are the group's thoughts on egg-scales for this campaign? ...I'm looking forward to the discussion!

I've never done one of these. The egg planes and ships are silly, off-scale, ridiculous caricatures - hardly what you might call serious "scale models"... but I have to admit they are a lot of fun! As it is, this hobby of ours is a little silly anyway (I alone among my non-modeling friends still play with the toys I loved as a five year old!), so as for egg planes and ships, I say, why not?

Hi Robby,

I am with Tim on this one, why not. The only codicil would be it has to fit the rules of the campaign, either as a ship (Full length flight deck) or an aircraft (in the markings of an aircraft that flew off a ship with a full length flight deck.)

Go for it.

Cheers

Si

I realize it's pretty late in the game here, but what are the group's thoughts on egg-scales for this campaign? My local IPMS chapter is doing a Corsair group build and I'm looking to do Hasegawa's eggplane offering of the gullwing fighter in markings of VF-17, which ran CAPs from both land and carriers.

I'm looking forward to the discussion!

Another quick update on my Akagi build. I added the arrestor cables to the flight deck, railings, and all of the odds and ends. Still working on the air wing. Just realized that there are 11 decals per plane, not nine.

Here are a few pictures.

The next set of photos will be the final with the air wing sitting on the flight decks.

I think I値l be in with the CVL-22 from dragon if started builds are allowed, or I have the Hornet. But would need to source a photo etch set.

Nice options Norman,

I used then WEM said with my CVL22, Hornet I don't know.

Either would be welcome.

Hmmm...

Pretty sure this would qualify. It would be different. But do I want to add one more campaign?

Michael

Hi Michael,

Looks good to me, the box art does show it taking off from a carrier!

Nice choice.
