There was no one color. Due to the use of ersatz material and different dyes the color varied immensely. For 1914 Tamiya field grey is a good match to the uniforms in the book World War I infantry in color photographs.

Later uniforms varied into more green and more brown and less grey, but definitely not blue. That's the prewar uniforms Landswehr sometimes used.

AK has a complete three colot set that works fine though, for the pants, I mix the basecolor with some grey.

Hi David,
Had this problem recently, searched around countless websites & forums to find perhaps a colour that most seemed to agree on. Sorry it's not Tamiya, but a generally accepted colour was Vallejos 'Field Blue' 964. However when I painted it on, it seemed to me 'too' blue, similar to the French uniforms? So I mixed it 50/50 with 'German Fieldgrey WW2' 830, and this looked better, still a hint of the blue, but not as strong.

Hope that's any help, obviously in paint colour it's each to their own, but this mix worked for me!
Cheers.
Simon

yeah its something i have seen, they sometimes look to blue or green in colour but this could be to do with the light that the pictures where taken in... i might invest in some vallejo paint since you think they work best.

Hi all,

i generally use tamiya paints and i was wondering what would be the best colour or mix of colours to recreate the German army uniform of World War 1?
