Hi Matt,

Your question leads to more questions!:

How big of a tent?

Is your question more about the number of ropes used for a big tent, or is it more about what scale size of rope to use?

If your question is more about the scale size to use, then by my guess, a 2-inch (25 mm) diameter rope in real life would scale down to 0.4861 inches (12.3469 mm).

Of course, my math could be way off, so double check those figures! Otherwise, I hope this helps a little bit.

Hello,
thanks for your reply. I meant tents like the appendix tent for an m577 command post or tents for up to 10 personnel..

My question is more about where to get realistic looking cord/rope in that scale (1/35)?

Greetings,

Matt

Look for Ship rigging thread. Various diameters and colors are usually available.

Yes, I've used castyouranchor.com to get various sizes of rigging thread. They are based in Canada.

Remembering back to my army days, the tents we used probably had ropes that were between three-quarters of an inch and one inch in diameter. The tents we used were mostly known as "GP-Large"(for General purpose); there was a central ridge pole, which was held up by 2 posts, on the inside of the tent. On the outside, there were probably a dozen or more ropes, attached to tent stakes, to keep the tent upright. My unit didn't use M577 vehicles, but I'd guess the tent ropes weren't that different from what we had on those GP-L tents.

Hope all that helps! Have you tried doing a search on those type of tents, to see what size rope was used to help keep them up? I would think, if you phrase your search right, you could probably find a field manual or technical manual that would have that information.

I would go for ropes with a diameter somewhere between a quarter inch and a half inch. This comes to 0.15 to 0.35 mm in 1/35. I wouldn't really call them ropes, more like strings on steroids
Sewing thread should work, possibly choose a somewhat heavier sewing thread. Hemp coloured?

Try carpet thread. It should be just the right thickness.
