Hi chaps,

I am having problems here. I am considering buying an airbrush and posibly a compressor. I do mainly Brit armour (WW2) so don't need anything too complicated (or expensive) and am totally confused as to what to get. I've been told that the machine mart own brand is a badger 400 which should do. I use humbrol paint and MIG powders.

I would appreciate any advice as to which way to go and which to spend any cash on.

Thanks in advance

Craig

hi craig! i used to have a badger 200 G which was a gravity feed version of a 200 along with a little compressor i got from my local hobby shop, which both served me well as i mainly use humbrol paints and with a fine head would let me do quite intricate schemes. the rig i have now is a aztec 470 double action, with a compressor i bought at telford two years agothat had a bit knocked off as a show special, plus a bit more off because it was the display one and did'nt have a box. the badger was about 60 but this was about 8 years ago, the aztec was 100 which i think is what they still are, my compressor was about 160 but this had 20 off at the show

Machine Mart do an airbrush which is similar to the badger 200, single action syphon feed. It isn't as good as the Badger but I used a Badger 200 for over 20 years and have only recently moved up to a double action. The Machine mart quasi Badger 200 should do you for what you need. In fact I spoke to a guy to day, who came to fix one of the machines at work, whom I advised to get one and he's quite happy with it, he said it cost him 19, I've seen them for 24. We actually use a Badger 400 for spraying at work and they don't last long (we are spraying 2 pack though).
A compressor with holding tank, moisture trap and regulater is a must, but you can get a perfectly good set up with a basic diaphragm compressor. Again that is what I used until mine finally gave up 2 years ago. I had a combined moisture trap and regulator and added a holding tank (otherwise you get pulsing). Before the holding tank I simply used a larger diameter hose between the compressor and thin airbrush hose.
Are you going to the Hinckley show?

Phil, mal.

thanks for that. I'm going to go to machine mart and price them up. I was told that they do reconed compressors which are a lot cheaper than new and as it's not for industrial use that should be okay.

Mal, I am going to Hinkley but don't know what time I'll be there, I've PM'ed you about the branch meeting as the site won't let me write a post on that thread.

Cheers

Craig

Yep got your PM, Jim has to do the biz to allow IPMS members to enter the branch forum. He still has alot on his plate but I will try and get that sorted for Friday.
See you at Hinckley, I'll bring along a couple of things, if I can find them

Mal,

Went to machine mart nd got a brush for under 10 quid, I don't know how good it is (or will be) but thought that I'd start on that one first and see how it goes. the other one was 24, ish.

The lad there said that they don't do reconned compressors but to be honest that can wait, as I've just moved my modelling room and have got to alter the office for SWMBO so I don't know how much room I've got and as we're having yet another rug rat I don't really want to spend the cash

See ya at Hinckley
