jba - Jean-Bernard brings us another emotion filled project. This is very characteristic of his work.
This one is from 1993. It is the third from the new serie I started after military service. Heavily influenced by eastern european cinema, indeed the girl on the dio (carved from the Dragon german ski troups box!) is Katerina Golubeva!

More on Katerina can be found here

Hi Jean-Bernard!

Excellent work! Very inspiring! As always, everything is in the detail.

I also like the picture you are using on your profile! Is it your Muse? :-)8

Thanks Rui, but i am surprised to see you there as it is probably one of the only dioramas I ever did where there is *not* the sea on it

Thanks Jean-Luc too! It is indeed my muse/wife on my profile, i got bored of seeing my grinning face everytime I went to see the counters below the dioramas, at least that makes a pretty sight in the grim atmosphere of my dios :-)

Hi jba,

That's some interesting and creative work you have there in your gallery.

Very cool indeed. The back drops add a lot to the mood and the craftmanship is just excellent.

Thanks for sharing.

Cheers

The whole scene reminds me of a Salvador Dali painting especially against the sky backdrop. Although I'm not familiar with the story this is a visually stunning dio. Empty spaces in dios are always a problem for dio modelers but in this case the sheer starkness really creates the mood which is even harder to do in dios.

This image is one that will stuck on my mind for a long time . Excellent work Jean-Bernard.

Hi JB,

Great work.

Was this the dio that you said the floor or the ruins or something was inspired by an old Masonic Lodge that you used to live near? If not, forgive my incoherant babbling :-)

Am I correct in my observation that the floor is covered by a thin layer of water? Or do my eyes deceive me?

Once again, brilliant work!

thanks for all the comments guys! The Dali/surrealism comparisons are really cool too
the sky backdrop certainly adds a lot to the whole effect as the diorama was first done using only 2 colours-including the fig. A few years later I replaced the original fig with the one that is currently on the scene and painted her coat in blue which is the main focus on the scene; here 's what it looked like this morning with its normal background!

As for empty spaces, I sure like them, that's the "thousand yard stare" all the people in my dios always have, therefore my dios have to be a bit empty.
thanks again!!!

I have just ordered the movie "Stalker" by Tarkovsky. The knowledge of the movie content and the book the movie is based on (the Strugatsky brothers' "Roadside Picknick") really sets this great diorama into a whole new context. I'm planning to do a little modelling job on a similar topic myself. Anyone played the game "S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Shadow of Chernobyl"?

hallo Richard, sorry to discover your answer 1 month later!
Tarkovski's Stalker is the most important single artistic influence on all my dioramas since I saw the movie back in 91.
i love so much the rust, the "passed war" feeling, the fact that in this world you can only go forward by throwing a nut.. My preferred move ever
So of course I bought Shadow of Chernobyl which is a very great game.. Actually i just can't play to it because i keep on starting it all over again because of the fear to be disappointed
