LRDG - 30 Cwt Chevrolet

  • move
Introduction

The Tamiya 1/35 scale Chevrolet LRDG truck has long been a popular kit. Made more than 30 years ago I picked up these two kits about 5 years ago and started collecting up various AM items for the build.

I did a blog of the build HERE on site and if the number of hits on the thread are any kind of indicator this is still a very popular kit. It takes a bit of TLC to build and I'm surprised no other manufacturer has produced an updated version, but it still builds into a good model.

This is my representation of two vehicles from 1 (New Zealand) Patrol, A squadron, Long Range Desert Group around September to November 1942. Both vehicles lack vehicles names at present but if these become available I may add them later and at some point in the future they will move to a more suitable base.

Greying slightly, but young at heart. I've been teaching adults off and on for most of my life. Left the services in 85 and first started modelling in about 87 for a few years. Then I had a long spell when I didn't build anything (too busy) and really just got started again during the summer of ...

Well done, especially the Breda version. I can't recall, but was it the technical of the year in '42? It is so interesting to see in the nowaday Lybian conflict they using very similar techniques... War never change...

Hi Michael, Stefan, Ales and Istvan, Thanks for looking in and the comments folks. With companies like New World Miniatures making an interesting range of new LRDG figures and the MasterBox 'in porgress' set , the future look bright for the Tamiya kit yet. I think it must be frustrating for people that they release the truck only as a Limited Addition now and again, thereby hicking up the price. I would be nice to see a new tooled vehicle along with some support trucks. This particular area of the desert campaign has and probably will always be of interest to modellers so it's a pity the vehicle choice is so limited. What's also surprising is that despite it's age no AM company ever made an alternative set of secals for the vehicles! There is probably an opportunity for several sets there. Glad you all enjoyed the build, it was a lot of fun. Cheers Al

Hi Alan, Super job, they both look excellent and of course very different to your usual European work. I guess the trouble is that you will not be able to use those nice cobblestones this time, it is time to start playing with sand and rocks. AS you know I have one of the limited release 30cwt and 20 mm Breda ones in the white box, I guess I probably need to get saving for some of the fabulous figures that you have added. Hope you are well, John

Hi John, Many thanks, yes I'm still pondering a base for them. I could do them individually which would help with the lack of space issue or on a small dio together. I have already cleaned up an old desert base ! The MasterBox figures look promising if you don't want the expense of the resin ones. Thanks for droppping in, look forward to your Breda Truck. Cheers Al
