Airfix!

Airfix!
For so many of us Airfix from Britain was our introduction to our shared hobby. Who else fondly remembers saving up their pennies to bring home one of those exciting little bags or boxes? Who else remembers hurriedly gluing together the latest acquisition to add it to the collection? Who else remembers that vivid art, each telling an evocative story of the subject concerned?

the campaign
The Ancient Airfix Assemblers campaign was our chance to relive those halcyon days, when references were unheard of, fist-sized rivets were the order of the day, and our imaginations were sufficient to overcome the fingerprints glued into the surfaces of the parts. Jessie_C came up with the idea and led the campaign to revive the joy in modelling we had when concerns of absolute accuracy were not important.

23 Modellers completed the campaign, finishing no fewer than 32 models. Cars, figures, aeroplanes, tanks, ships, a bus and even a railroad were the subjects. This turnout illustrates the vast range of subjects Airfix brought to our workbenches.

Finishers were:
Camogirl: 1/72 Albatros D.V

1/32 Ford 3Litre P68

Honourable mention goes to Faust, whose 1/32 1904 Mercedes was cruelly taken from us before its time by a catastrophic glue accident.
A couple of incomplete science fiction classics bring up the rear, Ian Clasper’s Eagle transporter and phantom_phanatic309’s 2001 Orion – seems a shame not to include photos of them, and finally…

Just to show we had some truly ancient kits and any thought of keeping them forever on the sprues was blown out in a whirl of glue and paint, a photo of steph2102’s Morris Cowley before the bag was opened.

let's do it again!
Anyone who would like to enter the Airfix II Campaign is welcome to head over to the sign-up page and enlist.

“As this is a remembrance of kits gone by, I think it's appropriate that we also take a moment to honor the aircrews who sacrificed limb and life to fill our empty cockpits.
May they model in peace.” - md72

I'm going to try it once again. Hey... I didn't stay up past midnight to out-bid those guys for nothing. ~ Jeff

Nice feature Jessica. Congrats to all those that finished. You all did a tremendous job. And it was a really fun campaign. And thanks for the honorable mention. It is odd how much that still annoys me but I'm still out on the hunt for a new one so I can try it again. I still have my driver that is now without a car.
