MrBlack Publications released the 12th handbook to the Figure Modelling series. Besides keeping to its high standard with the printing quality and content, it is so good to see many World War II pieces articles. It is in the same format as the former books - A4 size, matt laminated cover and 52 pages. Besides covering the standard subjects like assemblying, painting in oils and acrylics, articles of this book includes 3 articles for bust painters. Step-by-step presentation in numeric sequence and added texts make them easier to follow and more helpful. Articles are mostly for award winning models or original boxart paintings.

The book includes seven chapters with models from different scales and time periods. The chapters are ;

  • Painting Leather Garments & Luftwaffe Blue Uniform : Ernesto Reyes Stalhuth explains his boxart painting steps of Alpine Miniatures 120 mm figure 16014 Luftwaffe Ace Werner Mölders and figure base for the figure. He paints two headgears for the figure; a Visor cap and field cap. Besides a reference photo; 5 photos from different angles of assembled figure, 14 photos for head and headgears, 11 photos for clothing and 9 photos of the final are shown in 8 pages. Author gives his color codes and painting tips on the article.

  • Painting Cool Flesh Tones and Various Textures with an Eastern Front Theme : Carl Startin - Carlos Figureart shares painting of his award winning bust – Life Miniatures LM-B008 180 mm German Soldier MG42 Tripod Carrier Leibstandarte,Kharkov,1943. Text is explanative and photos are numbered to make it easier for the reader. 6 photos for fleshtones, 4 photos for helmet, 11 photos for parka and gear, 7 photos for finished bust. He explains how to use RB Models etch stencil to paint wood grain.

  • Painting Realistic Metal, Leather & Black Fabric : Ernesto Reyes Stalhuth brings us a step by step article for Pegaso Models 54 mm figure 54-235 Fratres Militiae and groundwork for the figure. Article includes 2 photos of preparation, 3 for face, 3 for tunic, 3 for cape, 3 for leather parts, 5 for metal parts, 2 for shield, 5 for the finished figure. As always, he tells his colors for base paints, shadows and highlights.

  • Painting Khaki Uniforms & Flesh Tones : Alex Varela - Iguazzu explains how he painted boxart of Tommy’s War 180 mm bust – TW10B02 Captain John Bradstock, South Wales Borderers, Tsingtao,1914. He gives his color recipes for face, uniform and 2 helmets – Wolseley and Brodie. 7 photos for face, 10 photos for uniform, 8 for helmets and 7 for final. Explanatory text supported with photos in numeric order.

  • Simulating Different Kinds of Fabrics & Materials : Another article from Ernesto Reyes Stalhuth with Pegaso Models 75 mm figure 75-027 Roman Officer of the Marines, 1st-2nd century A.D. He explains his techniques and color codes for acrylics and oils to paint leather armor, leather straps,cloak and shield. He also explains to how to paint the base for the figure.21 step by step photos in 5 pages.

  • Painting with Acrylic & Enamel Colours : Myeong-Ha Hwang paints boxart of Nuts Planet 180 mm bust NP-B001 Night’s Watch. Bust represent Jon Snow character of TV series Game of Thrones, acted by Kit Harington. A great article for bust painters. Very good text and 15 photos showing every step of painting process.

  • Painting A Medieval Soldier Combinig Acrylics and Oils : Sergey Popovichenko brings a well detailed step by step article for his painting of BestSoldiers 75-007 Byzantine Heavy Infantry Warrior. Sergey first explains painting face and other flesh tones in 12 photos, then 13 photos for clothing , a nice detailed text for shield and pattern with 8 photos. He finished the article explaining the base in 8 photos.

    Quality and profitability of this series proved itself both for new and experienced modelers. The book is again a great reference for all and good to see World War Two related figure articles increase.
