about the figure
The Battle of Crete was a battle during World War II on Crete, a Greek island on the Eastern Mediterrenean. The battle began on the morning of 20 May 1941, when Germany launched an airborne invasion of Crete under the code-name Operation Mercury. Greek rebels and Allied forces defended the island.
After one day of fighting, the Germans had suffered appalling casualties and none of their objectives had been achieved. The next day, through miscommunication and the failure of Allied commanders to grasp the situation, Maleme airfield in western Crete fell to the Germans, enabling them to fly in reinforcements and overwhelm the Allied forces.
The Battle of Crete was unprecedented in three respects: it was the first-ever mainly airborne invasion; it was the first time the Allies made significant use of intelligence from the deciphered German Enigma code; and it was the first time invading German troops encountered mass resistance from a civilian population. In light of the heavy casualties suffered by the parachutists, Hitler forbade further large scale airborne operations. However, the Allies were impressed by the potential of paratroopers, and started to build their own airborne divisions.
The figure YS 4801 represents a German Paratrooper – Fallschirmjager Machine Gunner in battle of Crete.
The figure comes in a 95 x 65 x 30 mm. white color good quality cardboard box. The cover of the box shows a photo of the figure painted by George Hatzopoulos. The sides of the box gives information about the product and company.
Inside the box, there is a small piece of polyfoam to protect the parts and a small paper sheet including contact details of YS Castings.
Parts are well secured in a plastic bag and small parts are given attached to resin casting blocks.
The figure is sculpted by Greek sculptor George Hatzopoulos and made up of 8 resin parts. Despite the small scale, all parts are cast clean and crisp in very good details. No cleaning process will be needed but the tiny parts need attention when seperating from casting blocks.
The main part is Body with head and legs. He wears a Fallschirmschützenbluse M1938 - Knochensack jumpsmock over his Luftwaffe uniform. The jumpsmock is painted Step-in Green in the boxart but also can be painted in camouflage pattern. Trageriemen - Y straps, Paratrooper type gasmask case Gasmaskbeutel in cloth cover and bread bag- Brotbeutel are cast on the figure. The cloth folds, equipments,belt, Y-straps and cross strap of gasmask case are all well defined. The Luftwaffe side cap Fliegermütze - Schiffchen is inserted under his belt buckle. He wears a M38 Fallschirmjager helmet and jump boots. Facial details and helmet straps are well represented in this scale.
Other parts are ;
Right arm : The sleeve of the jumpsmock is upfolded on the ankle and the handle of the ammo can is cast with the right hand.
Left arm : Posed to carry the machine gun on his left shoulder. The sleeve is upfolded and bipod of MG-34 is cast with the hand.
MG-34 : He carries a Maschinengewehr 34, German air-cooled machine gun firing 7.92x57 mm. rounds on his left shoulder. The long barrel of the part makes it a fragile piece and extra attention needed when seperating it from the casting block.
Ammo can : A 300 rounds metal ammo can - Patronenkasten 34 is carried on his right hand.
Holster : He carries a Walther P-38 in holster on the left side.
Gunners pouch : He carries necessary equipments like AA sight, oil can, broken shell extractor in a pouch on the right side of his waist. This pouch is called Werkzeugtasche.
Canteen : The water bottle - Feldflasche is attached to his belt on the right hip.
