Lately Italian Masterclass miniatures has released 2 Wild West kits .
This one is called “Western Gun”.The release code is MCF – 54021 and the kit is including 1 54mm cow boy miniature and a Horse with equipment in white metal .
The kit is sculpted from the well known miniature sculptor Stefano Sartorello and the box art version of the vignette is painted by Italian painter Ellio Stella .
Regarding the packing method , Masterclass boxing is good enough. This means that the29 (25 for the figure and 4 for the base) kit parts are really well protected in small plastic bags, sandwitched between thick foam sheets, and finally putted in a hard carton box .
Some white thread is included , for recreating the rope under scale. Also some lead foil for the horse reins is included .
Outside a colored sleeve including the box art painting pictures at the front and the back of the box is wrapping it.
The truth is that this should be the most heavy 54mm kit I remember I ever processed . And that goes because the finally assembled kit length uses an equally long base , that adds a lot to the weight of the kit, since everything is casted in white metal
Theme and Pose
This figure is ….different . Inspired by Cinema films with Wild West subjects and Terence Hill as a protagonist . So we have a horse dragging a self made “bed” thing with Terence Hill , or Western Gun if you prefer lying relaxing on it.
This makes a nice and humorous scene, and I guess it will be appreciated from many modelers , especially the ones that like western subjects
The figure is really well proportioned, and the face has nice characteristics and likeness , with the live actor . Looking at the painted box art you really get a motive to paint this one !
The figure is not a slim 54mm as of other companies , but more close to 63 mm so that’s good for the modelers that prefer bigger figure size .
Quality and Detail
The kit has the good quality of previous Masterclass releases, and maybe even a bit better . The white metal quality is really good,, with clean surface and the casting is also at very good level.
After the kit examination , I was happy enough , since the kit did not needed extensive cleaning or corrections with putty , unless some normal putty work on the horses belly joint .
Now few mold lines are evident but also soft and they will be eliminated easily with a new blades soft passing.
To finish you must perform a pass with some steel wool and some bath in mild detergent and is ready to prime.
Sculpted Detail is really crisp and clear. All parts are detailed and even if the kit needs enough work to assembly and paint , I think that this wont be a torturous procedure .
The horse is really nice looking, with good anatomy and a nice ehad, and also the self made wood construction of the “bed “ is impressively big , and well made regarding it’s detailing .
Few more details as the hanging, frying pan, the hanging boots , and the cow skull on the ground , are definitely touches , that a modeler will evaluate and appreciate, because they will give his vignette a special flavor of modeling attention .
This is a relatively “free” kit for painting , and that’s good . You can check all the cinematic reference library and pick your choice for the cow boy’s clothing and also for the horse coloring scheme . Since you will recreate a western scenery, you will use many earth related colors, such as browns, ochres, and a lot of dust.
Since this is not a very complicate to assemble figure (despite the large number of parts ) , I can not consider it a difficult kit for painting .
Of course painting a horse is not very easy , especially for beginners , but there is always a first time ! The result will be humorous and impressive . A piece with unique look for your showcase
Conclusion – Final Verdict
If you like Western themes , and also film characters recreated in miniatures, this is your chance !
The theme is nice, the detail and sculpting quality is high, and in general definitely will satisfy the modeler .
