Finally the first mounted kit in 75mm from Authors Sculpt is here . And it is a Trapper – American Mountain Man of 1800 period .
This 75mm mounted kit is, sculpted by Russian master Sergey Zlobov, who’s works, especially on horses, have a great appeal in modelling world for their sculpting and moving poses.
Packing – First Impression
The box is the standard book style box of AS company . Hard carton in earth colors , with nice graphics and an unpainted version of the constructed kit photograph as a box art.
As we open , there are few plastic bags to include the kit’s pieces, and all these protected from a thick foamy sheet. The box proved safe enough to carry the figures with no problem of damage.
The Kit (what’s in the box)
The kit comes in a medium grey color resin material and as it was told of 23 pieces
5 for the trapper , 6 for the horse, one for the base , and the rest as equipment and decoration additions on the horse .
Included also is a 2 page color guide for painting each separate element, consisted from pictures of actual items that was really nice to have.
All pieces were safe and solid once I unpacked .
Quality – Detail
Sergey’s attention to detail is well known after many kits he has presented already.
This kit is not an exception and I have a feeling that he has this is one of his favorite themes. And this is because he has given special attention to every piece and in making them look like the real thing.
Check the skinned beaver pelts stretched out on willow hoops, the nicely grained deer antler , the canteen , the fringed buckskin sleeves , and you will make a clue of what i am talking about.
As it has been so far, the casting of AS, is really nice. Crisp, accurate, clean and without problems of deformation or holes , is completing the good impression for the company’s effort
Few things will need cleaning , and some putting maybe around the joints of the horse parts , but nothing extraordinary , or even much .
And of course is good that with not much of preparation you will be able to prime and start painting.
The pose of the mountain man , is a moving one and more accurately, is a “braking” the horse one, with the right arm holding the rifle on the air. The pose and movement is really natural and if you could make with your mind the whole process of halting a horse like that while holding a rifle on the other hand , I guess the result would be this one .
What made me feel really good , was that Sergey did not made any discount , at “loading” the kit with nice details
A 75mm mounted kit cannot be one for absolute beginners . But this is modeling. The result must be appreciated firstly by the maker. So this is a theme with not really strict painting schemes, or some difficult flag to paint . It will need patience , because of the horse, and also the different items to be carried. So this will demand a lot of outlining and toning, and surface separation. But this is the beauty of painting anyway .
I would also suggest a nice scenery, with water and vegetation , to go with this “rich” kit
I was really happy when informed about this release. And that was because I
knew before ,that 2 more mounted Mountain men of Sergey, were prepared for release with Seil Models, but didn’t made it because the company closed down few months ago. So it was about time .
After seeing this one and having it on the bench , I must say that Sergey is “obliged” to sculpt few more superb Mountain men like this one. These figures will definitely prove very popular!
Finally, High quality of casting, a lot of nicely sculpted detail, in a “loaded” kit and a theme that is always in “fashion” make this kit an excellent option for painting.
