Model Scene

A new scenery company from the Czech Republic, Model Scene produces landscaping materials for model railroad layouts or other dioramas. Their products are handmade so each piece is unique. Models available include trees, ground cover foliage, leaves, wooden fences and laser cut precise details. Model Scene advertises their product range as appropriate for scales:

* 1:32 (Number 1 Gauge) / 1:35
* 1:45 / 1:48 ( O scale)
* 1:72
* 1:87 (H0 scale)
* 1:120 (TT scale)
* 1:160 (N scale)

the larch

Around the world there are 10-14 species of larches, which are deciduous (losing its leaves every year) conifers. They reach a height of 15-50m tall. Their shapes tend to differ. I dare not attempt to identify the specific tree this model represents. From the many images I references, it appears to be the Western larch of North America, though it also has the shape of the European, or Alpine, larch.

the model

The trees are plastic trunks and armatures with some texture for the bark. Upon these are affixed multicolored short lengths of synthetic material for the foliage. The result is a convincing tree that does not have the "cookie cutter" duplication of most mass-marketed model trees. The synthetic foliage has a slight sheen to it, but this can easily be remedied with a dulling finish. Compared to larch photographs the foliage appears too concentrated.

The sprinkled needles make a beautiful profile. In the sunlight they leave a realistic shadow. You can expect the same in artificial light.

This tall trunk larch is two-piece. The tall spares trunk is affixed to the conical top with what appears to be hot glue. This glue softened in the sun during the photographing of the models. It did not soft to the extent that the top tumbled off the trunk nor became lopsided.

The height of the 200 mm, 8-inch tree scales to:
* 23 feet / 7.5 M in 1:35
* 32 feet / 11 M in 1:48 ( O scale)
* 48 feet / 15 M in 1:72
* 58 feet / 19 M in 1:87 (H0 scale)
* 80 feet / 25 M for 1:120 (TT scale)
* a stately 106 feet / 34 M in 1:160 (N scale)

Each handmade tree is sold separately. This set is set upright in green painted Styrofoam, packaged in a flimsy clear plastic box.

Model Scene larches come in different sizes and shapes. These are impressive models and will enrich any diorama.

I'm a professional pilot with a degree in art. My first model was an AMT semi dump truck. Then Monogram's Lunar Lander right after the lunar landing. Next, Revell's 1/32 Bf-109G...cried havoc and released the dogs of modeling! My interests--if built before 1900, or after 1955, then I proba...
