Introduction
The United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity defines biotechnology as "Any technological application that uses biological systems, living organisms, or derivatives thereof, to make or modify products or processes for specific use."
For any science-fiction or games fan first connotation is also simple – some advanced technology mixed with living tissues, advanced A.I., cyborgs, UAC mars bases and all that biological stuff covering cables, hydraulic cylinders and electronics.
Bio-tech series bases offered by Micro Art Studio perfectly keeps that science-fiction mood. Series contains 32 (so far) round bases of different size (diameter from 25mm to 60mm) and shape. Bases are sold in sets including from one (for biggest – 50mm and 60mm) to five (for 25mm and 30mm) bases randomly picked from selected size.
The Base
Micro Art Studio offers 60mm round base from their Bio-tech series. The base (as all from this series) was created by Piotr Kupper.
Base comes in standard Micro Art Studio blister with name of the kit printed on it, protected by soft black foam from the back.
Base shows part of floor that could easily represent some alien, cyborg or – if things went very, very wrong - human base or factory. It is build with several metal plates, some of them are joined with rivets. Two round lights are also visible. Two covers screwed to the ground close valves or cable hubs or other construction/maintenance holes. Multiple pipes (some smooth and some ridged) are visible, also through the slots in floor panels. In the middle of the base there is a small tank with some bubbling liquid. Three human sculls are floating in the tank giving whole scene a dark mood.
Assembly and Painting
Kit is one-piece so no assembly takes place. Painting instruction is not included leaving everything to painters’ imagination. Good example of painting is shown on catalogue picture available on Micro Art Studio’s website.
Detailing and Quality
Base is made in dark grey resin. All details are nicely visible, crisp and clean. Almost no cleaning is required and base is actually ready to be painted. Ribbing of pipes, rivets, nuts and plates’ edges are clearly visible making this base a good subject for painters. Skulls are also nicely sculpted.
Conclusion
It is great base for a science-fiction figure. Grim character, nice and crisp details and good price make this base very interesting offer for s/f or wargame miniature painters. Due to the fact that tank with skulls is placed in a center not every figure may fit this base or will fit after small modification or adjustment, but it will require far less effort than building base of such quality from the scratch.

Base is no longer available from Micro Art Studio but can be purchased from Basicks
