35009 “Animals – Set 2 (European)” is a set of 1/35th scale resin animals sculpted by Przemyslaw Szymczyk. The set features a selection of small European mammals, birds and reptiles. Released circa February 2010, the box-art is painted by Artur Miniszewski.

35009 Animals – Set 2 (European)

The animal set, moulded in light grey coloured resin, comes in a kit form containing nine (9) animals consisting of a total of eleven (11) pieces. The kit is packaged in a small card box with the figure’s parts securely in a small zip-lock bag.

Set 35009 “Animals – Set 2 (European)” consists of the following eleven (11) parts:

  • One stork with legs cast separately;
  • One owl;
  • One fox;
  • One otter;
  • Two squirrels; and
  • Three frogs.

    Overall, the set is finely sculpted; although to be perfectly honest I do not know how accurately the pieces represent the real animals or if they depict any particular breeds. To reiterate though, the pieces are neatly sculpted, with each beast’s fur, or feathers, finely textured and having clear muscle definition.

    The animals are featured in somewhat neutral poses, making them ideal for idyllic, countryside scenes.

    The castings are clean; however each animal is attached to a fairly large casting block (comparative to the size of the animal). While these are essential to the casting processes and the maintenance of detail, they do make life interesting for the modeller: the casting blocks will need to be very carefully removed for want of damaging the parts.

    Overall Mantis Miniatures’ “Animals – Set 2 (European)” is a finely sculpted set of animals, which will enrich a countryside scene. I cannot comment of the accuracy of animals, but they do look the part. The size and location of the casting blocks will require some patience in the removal thereof, but apart from that the set requires little clean-up.

    Highs: Finely sculpted animals that look the part.
    Lows: Heavy, but necessary, casting blocks.
    Verdict: Mantis Miniatures’ second set of animals is a finely sculpted set of animals, which will enrich an idyllic European countryside scene.

    Rudi- Thanks for the great review! Huge kudos to Mantis Miniatures for bringing these to us! Guess I'm going to have to model if I spend too much of my food budget on plastic! What a great diet! Cheers! Rick

    Thanks for the review Rudi. I suppose it's a good thing that Mantis are doing animals but these do look a little static almost like lawn ornaments and that otter looks way out of proportion beside the fox.
