Introduction

Micro Art Studio known for their wide range of bases, figures and Discworld Miniatures series offers also many parts, mostly in 30mm scale, that may be used to convert existing figures. Conversion Lab series includes replacement heads, bodies, shoulder pads, etc.
Two of the product from this series are Mechanical Wings sets created by Łukasz Perzanowski. Micro Art Sudio has sent us Set 2 for review.
Łukasz Perzanowski created all Iron Brotherhood figures and accessory available from MAS. These figures are inspired by Warhammer 40k Adeptus Mechanicus and wing set reviewed below is perfectly matching the mood of WH40k and tech priests.

The kit

Kit comes in standard MAS blister with the name of kit printed on it. Parts are protected by blister and piece of dark grey polyfoam.
Set includes three parts necessary to build one set of mechanical wings: symmetrical left and right wing presented in “closed” position and a rucksack being some sort of a jet-pack with exhaust pipes.
Wings are made of blade-like “feathers” attached to supporting arms. Joints on supporting arms have gears on the upper side are operated by pneumatic or hydraulic or pneumatic cylinders visible on the down side of the wing.
Each wing is about 44mm (measured from joint to the very tip of the wing) and the rucksack is about 27mm high.
Kit was originally used with Iron Brotherhood FL Angel 02 kit (visible below the review) but the rucksack may be easily adjusted and attached to most of figures of proper size.

Assembly and painting

No instruction of assembly is attached nor required. Parts are constructed in a way that almost disables possibility of assembling them in NOK position or orientation. Pictures available on MAS website are great assembly and painting instruction but since wings are 100% fictional object it is totally up to painter to choose the paint scheme.
Rucksack has two round sockets for wings assembly. Fit between the parts is quite tight but enables some adjustment of wings angle.

Detailing and Quality

Parts are made in high quality dark grey resin.
Design of wings is really nice. Łukasz must have thought the whole thing through because they actually look like operational – feather-blades are closed in a way that actually may work during opening and movement of wings. Cylinders are on both sides of supporting arms as they would actually be responsible for straightening and closing of whole construction.
All these details are crisp and very clean and it should be a pleasure to paint them. Only minimal cleaning of wings is required.
A little more work is required with the rucksack since there is quite a lot of flesh present on seam lines. Flesh is quite thin and it should not be a problem to remove it.

Conclusion

Interesting and useful kit if you want to modify your figure and give it wings – great for S/F wargame figures (or even for i.e. mechanized Dwarf armies or steampunk miniatures). Easy to assemble and really nice looking set in low price.
It sure requires preparation but after assembly it is going to give new fresh look to any figure.
