A trick I used when I made a lot of wargaming terrain was to buy a small pot of textured white wall paint. Cost about the equivalent of 5 dolars for half a litre. Beats using glue and sand or similar metodes, and looks just like sandstone when liberally washed with a brownish water color when dry... Would work on dioramas or for building up a real muddy effect on armoured vehicles in larger scales. Often you can buy sample pots of water based wall paints really cheap as well, for any large scale dioramas.

This isn't quite "free", but cheap. If you need a piece of rubber, I found that the foam rubber koozies are perfect. I cut a section off and save the rest, for when the cut section wears out.

They are rubber/vinyl slips to keep canned drinks cold.

I would think you could use rubber O rings (REAL rubber on your tank, how fancy ). Shaping them correctly could be a challenge but they're really cheap.

Dried grape stems make for great bush and tree branches. So long as you like grapes, they are "free".

I paint a lot of wargame figures besides models and my bush water can get a bit slopped around when I'm in my groove. To help stop water creeping around the desk I use inverted plastic lids from things like sour cream and yogurt as coasters with a lip. I have them under my rinse waters. They also get collected for putty and glue palettes.
