I've seen references to discharged soldiers in various stories, but what did they do, simply walk home in their old uniforms? I read that in the early Soviet Army, soldiers who left could keep their clothes but not their equipment.

In Viet Nam, after their war of independence against France, the Viet Minh dissolved and many men returned home with their weapons.
