@Alex: As Marco said, AM parts DO count as separate pieces. Maybe with the limitation that only those count that will be added on the final model, of course.

@Marco: Thank you! No worries, I'm not very possessive of this thread

Maybe it would help those undecided yet to hear everybody's plans for this campaign, provided we'll get enough interested people. So let me start with my possible candidates:

- Trumpeter's Scud (1300+ parts) being currently built, about 30% ready
- Trumpeter's HQ-2 Missile on Transport Trailer, not started
- Trumpeter's or Meng's new Smerch if I can lay my hands on a fairly priced item
- Trumpeter's T-80BV
- Trumpeter's 2S19
- Trumpeter's with MAZ-537G with ChMZAP-5247G

As of now, I'm leaning towards the Scud as that's already started.

Those Dragon "super kits" are simply monsters! But, hey! No matter whether a mere 210 track links or 2 pieces of DS stuff swapped in "for simplification in building", you are still talking 800+ "real parts" Those Dragon IV super kits offer the modeler the exquisite opportunity to lose a rod-bearing from a final drive unit without actually having to get greasy while doing so!

The Dragon Dicker Max I'm ready to haul into this shindig with has a mere 1015+ parts (including about 210 track links)... and I have perhaps another 180 PE bits that I might add on. And the ol' Dicker isn't even one of those "super kits"!

Fortunately, looks like folks could give us maybe a whole year to get this thing done! I'll have to make a careful note about the SIZE of my kit going in... Waiting until the last month to start something (like I have more than once before) with a mere 500 - 1000+ bits might be trying one's luck just a bit!

Come on, Tat! Choose one of those IV super-kits and let those little bearings just ROLL!

Count me in. I can't tell with which kit though as I have a number of them fitting the requirements.
I wouldn't be able to start my model earlier than Feb 2016 but one year is enough to have something completed.

Hi, as Sean 35th has mentioned I have the Meng Terminator and this has 810 parts just for the two tracks without the rest of the kit.

I am intending to build this as part of a group build on another site in the new year. But as long as this acceptable to post here too then I'd be in for my first campaign here

4 parts per link IS crazy!

But, as I have discovered... Happens more often than at first we believe it should; I have a set of modelkasten links for a Panther - each link has 2 separate horns, and 2 different track pins... for a total of 5 pieces per link in the run! Talk about CRAZY! But they come out looking, well, like miniature Panther tracks!

I suppose that if we didn't have just the occasional glint of creeping insanity in the eye, we wouldn't be in this hobby - crazy as it often gets (OK. Think about the premise of THIS proposed campaign...)!

Bob, just thinking about it now makes me

I just saw in stash that the Ausf E is also in the 1000+ part category. Either any these Dragon super kits or Trumpeter's Pz IV Bruckenleger at 700+ parts will be my choice. Going for the Trumpeter though poses an additional problem of storage space if built fully extended!

Since this is about building large models, the number of parts that form the final model is what counts. Most kits have some spare parts for different variants but generally these account for less than 10% so I didn't wanted to pick these out and complicate the rules too much.

To answer your question: scratch built parts count as separate components. However, parts that are normally moulded on like rivets are not to be counted separately. There goes the keep it simple rule

I sent off the proposal. The confirmation text says it may take up to two weeks before we hear back. Keeping fingers crossed!

Careful, Cristian! Keeping those fingers crossed for 2 weeks could lead to increased stiffness, even possibly a near-permanent kink or two! And that just won't do at all if you are planning on tackling something with many hundreds of often tiny parts in it! I suggest that you occasionally open and flex your hand from time to time while we all wait!

Come on, David! Like Cristian says; Time to face your fears! We're all here to... suffer and stare and get all queasy and feel numbed by the huge pile of parts waiting for our personal attention - right along beside YOU! You'll be in fine company, friend!

Only 1000 parts to go? What's to worry about! It'll still look like a completed model in the end! Just took a little longer to get to that point than did some!

I think I can try and live with the high parts count. It's the PE work -- especially the tiny bits to hold and fold that seem daunting. What the heck, might as well give it a go and have one less from the stash!

The PE folding and soldering is the fun part. The part I hate is cleaning up mold lines on all of the super fine bits. It's a task that has to be done but it's boring in the extreme.

Should have read this last night... I hope my fingers will recover 'till we're ready to start

@Tat: I tentatively sent out 15.10.2015 as starting date and 20.12.2016 as end date. Let's see if that gets approved.

The part I personally hate is washing the parts after opening the box. I spent an hour and half tete-a-tete in the bathroom with the Trumpeter Scud kit, just a few weeks ago. On the other side, this later saves my mental sanity when the paint will not peel off... as often.

Ouch. I have to admit that I usually take some 91% isopropyl alcohol and swipe some of the larger surfaces with it while holding it under a light. If I see residue I wash the model, if not, I press blindly forward.

Admittedly, that's probably not the best idea, but I really haven't had many issues. I think will probably try to do better on this next build but I don't tend to wear gloves until after I paint, so I' e always cleaned major surfaces to remove oils from handling with the same alcohol swab method I used to test.

Maybe two wrong processes can make a right

Reading through a thread about washing or not the sprues a few weeks ago here on Armorama, I was surprised to see I was the only one doing it in about 10 people replying so it might be me. Still, even after cleaning the sprue (each piece, really using an old toothbrush and dishwashing liquid in warm water) I still see paint puddling up on greasy surfaces from time to time so I do think it is worth spending the extra time.

Not questioning that it's worth the time, but just saying that I've been lax at best in practicing that modeling discipline.

I'm also thinking about building the Bronco Archer now... Still undecided.
