Well, I don't know if the Scottish use that word, but...
I've got some Historex Highlander figures, but one problem-no assembly directions!
First, I cannot figure out how to put the feathers on the hats, which way they go and in what direction and angle.
Also, I wonder about kilts. Would the actual tartans be even visible at 1/32 scale? If so, you'd think somebody would make decals that would fit on top of the kilts.

first of all, your terminology is incorrect and secondly the tartan would most likely to be visible in 1/35 and possibly in smaller scales depending on the actual tartan itself as there are thousands to choose from

Man o man is David correct about the thousands of Tartans. My great grandfather came to North America (Canada then US) and trying to figure out what where he was from and of course what tartan (which means you need to figure out the Clan / sept) he might of wore (if in fact he did). All plaid to me. But for accuracy you my want to pick the correct tartan. Don't want to have a bunch of Clan McDonalds figures wearing Clan Campbell tartans

The 42nd Highlanders used general government tartans. You'd think Historex or somebody would make tartan decals to fit over kit kilts. Hand painting would be next to impossible for all but the most expert!

Not sure if you could edit the pattern from a .jpg and try to reduce it to that scale and print it with a inkjet printer on decal film. I am sure it will look very pixelated. I did a quick google of images of the 42nd Highlanders tartan and it looks like you have multiple choices on tartan patterns.

If you are modelling the Black Watch (42nd Foot) take heart! It is actually one of the easiest Tartans to paint and is eminently possible to do convincingly in 1/32 (54mm). It is even visible and do-able in 1/72. It consists as per Robbie's link of the dark blue ground with green overstripe. With a bit of practice getting the lines straight it's easier than it looks. Remember that where your green lines cross there is a square of bolder green.
The "Government Tartan" of the Black Watch is also the basis for most of the other regimental tartans (e.g Gordons is same with an additional thin yellow stripe).

There's no excuse for you not to know. Even a cursory Google of Highland feather bonnet 1815 and click on images would have shown losds of references.
I suppose failing all else, you could read the indtruction leaflet
