Yep, all airbrushed. Only the handles and ashtrays were hand painted with a tiny little 20/0 pointed brush. I virtually dry-brush them with Tamiya X-11 Chrome Silver acrylic so I don't go slopping it everywhere. It is a bit more time consuming but I find it easier and neater.

At least you haven't used Champagne pink! (just teasing! ). I actually like pretty much the wine red you have in there per se and the whole combo. Yep, very neat and good looking job!

Thanks Gabriel. I’m thinking I might go over the seats again with a fine brush and some enamel thinner and reduce the pin wash a bit. It has cured quite dark, heavier than I really wanted.

Let me know if you would like me to send you a bottle for the Duesenberg, easy to arrange. I'm not sure about the customs at your end, it's an acrylic lacquer. I love the colour, and you're absolutely right, it would look amazing on the SJ. It's a good match for the box top image.

Fantastic job on the interior. The Red Wine color really, and I mean really looks great. The effort to air brush rather then hand paint paid off in Spades. I do agree that another light going over with thinner to kill some of the black wash especially on the doors would help soften the shadow effect, and make it a little less uniform.

That's the reason why I almost gave up using Tamiya panel liner. I bought instead artist's oils that have much subtler tones: my all time favorites being van Dyck Brown and Payne's Gray.

Thanks Russell, glad you like it mate! I didn't pick you to be the type to hang around at Knifeland !

Gabriel and Joel, I picked up a bit of a range of oils a while back to start to practise some techniques, and have been watching a ton of YouTube videos as well as browsing forums. Definitely looks like the way to go for the type of weathering I want to achieve.



I used them for the first time on the bed of the 55 El Camino, still a loooooong way to go to get to where I want skill wise. All pointers gratefully accepted.

D., that's a buy you'll never regret! And that stock should be a lifetime supply, because the pigment concentration is huge in these tubes and they last forever, being in oil suspension.
As you noted, practicing is the key. The applications are unlimited, from leather effects to mapping (modulation) and rusting, smoke effects, wood finishes, filters and anything in between.
My favorite technique is the accent wash (especially for leather and fabric effects) and filter dot technique, especially for aircraft and armor.
Have fun with them - yes, there is a lot of fun!

That's some supply you've got there. Gives you plenty of options.

I've expanded over the years to all the Tamiya panel line washes. Only the Black and Dark Brown work. Don't bother with the gray or light brown. I've also bought some earth tone chalks for dry brushing, which I never remember to use. And two tubes of artist oils: Black and Brown that work better then the Tamiya panel line washes for filters.

Sometimes you get to a point in a build and you sit back and start to question your direction, second guess yourself. I hit that point with the 55 Nomad/El Camino conversion when I couldn't visualise the wheels, so I went to the local Facebook group for custom auto modelling for advice. One of the members kindly sent me 2 sets of wheels from this kit for free!


I just couldn't help myself tonight, I changed over the rubber to something with tread, dry fitted the undercarriage, tub and body and put it all together for a quick progress/confirmation/stop bloody over-thinking everything photo-shoot.



Celebratory JD on ice is in order, I'm right back on track now!

Bonus is that there are 2 narrow and 2 wide wheels in each set, so the wide wheels are on the El Camino, and the matching narrow wheels will go perfectly on the tandem trailer behind it!

Ain't that the truth! I'm really glad you guys approve of the wheels, I think that they set it up nicely.

The same guy who sent me the wheels also sent me (for a nominal cost) a part-built tandem trailer from this old kit.


This is the only image I could find of it built up after some Googling

And here is what I have to work with


As I said in the previous post, I have a set of narrow rims and tyres to match the El Camino, I just need to scratch build a tow hitch set up and jockey wheel. I am also thinking of putting an angled roof extension on the shroud at the front of the trailer to protect the front of the car, and a couple of steps and toolboxes on the sides of the trailer. I'm going to have a lot of fun detailing this one out! It will be a good practise run for the 1/12 version down the track. Open to suggestions on colour for the trailer, I don't really want to go black like the El Camino as I will probably hitch it up to other cars on display.

D., awesomeness is the name of the game! Nice truck, nice wheels, nice trailer!

Now, if you want to display more cars on the trailer (I built one for the very same reason a while ago), you should chose a "modest" color. Although I've done mine looking like a parrot, I should have stayed put to dark grey / black and maybe some dull silver (hindsight).

Gabriel, totally agree, this will be done in a "neutral" scheme so that it can be paired up with other tow vehicles without too much clash.

Chev didn't start manufacturing the El Camino until 1959 as a pick-up version of the Impala. Any based on the Tri-5 series will be custom made, cut down from Nomads generally.

I 2nd what D said. The 'Bird looks great. I'm counting on you once you finish up your current project to bring it back to life and finish it.

That exact firebird was made famous by the Bandit in Smokey & the Bandit. It's one of the most famous of all the Hollywood cars.
