I'm sure it's too late but I finally finished my Surcouf. This is only my 2nd ship, and the only one I've tried to weather. Not the best photos, but here they are.

Rodger,
You're not late at all. The campaign doesn't end until Tuesday, the 31st. Your sub looks really nice. Thanks for your contribution!

Rodger,

Very fitting to dedicate it to Garry. I'm not sure how you feel, but for me the conclusion of this campaign will be bitter-sweet. I guess it has been a link to him and once over so too the connection. In a way, I'm glad that the Gato and the U-Boat will be the only subs that I'll finish for the campaign. They were what he and I discussed...often.

On a lighter note, tell me about your sub, what navy did it serve in? What scale is it? I think the turret and guns are rather interesting. The masts remind me of post WWI designs.

It looks alright Rodger...

Take care
Steve

Nice build of an old kit. I saw your earlier posts about building this kit. You did a good job with a rare subject. Yes I think Garry would be happy that so many of us have completed submarines. He was really into exposing us all to the salty side.

I for one am going to try to build something for all of the campaigns that he inspired. He is a great loss to this site and others. He was always there happy to lend a helping hand and good advice.

Oops, thought I mentioned it. It's a 1/400 scale Heller kit of the French sub Surcouf. Those are 8 inch guns, about 196mm. The small gunnery control position wasn't high enough to see even to the horizon, nowhere near the full range of the big guns. Later they raised the entire conning tower to give the fire control more range. The spotting plane was to allow the guns to fire to their max range.

The sub went over to the Allies after the fall of France as a Free French ship. The accepted story is she was rammed in a collision with an American merchantman, and lost. There are conspiracy theories that the Free French crew didn't like serving under Allied control and were defecting to Vichy France, so had to be sunk.

The kit was so so, not the easiest to put together, but not too bad.

Rodger,

I like the sub, but I love those guns!
Great job, specially when you say it's an old so-so Heller model.
