“Armour Ghetto”

  • move
I decided to build Dragon’s M1A2 SEP after reading many reviews, comments and rants about how good it is. I opened the box to a mass of styrene, I have never seen so much! I had never built a Dragon Model before and I was pleasantly surprised at its quality and fit. I chose to build “Armour Ghetto” and the finished product can be seen below.

Lewis, A few errors that shouldn't be too difficult to correct. You are missing the three brackets that go into the holes on the front of the Main Gun Mantlet: Should look like this (image from Prime Portal): The other item is the last skirt over the drive sprocket on the port/left side of the hull: This small skirt is only attached the the #6 skirt via a continuous hinge and a pin hinge to the rear skirt plate below the taillight assembly. If you remove the #6 skirt, the last skirt would flop around and possibly even sag into the track. This image shows (it's the starboard/right side but otherwise the same) the continuous hinge on the #6 skirt and the pin hinge connection to the rear skirt plate (picture from Prime Portal): This image from Prime Portal shows the #6 with the last skirt "opened": The Loader's M240 Skate Rail is Stainless Steel (image from Prime Portal): Finally, the left headlight (from the front) is missing its guard brackets but also the tow pintle bracket, which is welded to the hull. The headlight guard bracket can be unbolted, but I believe the thicker tow pintle bracket (rounded with two holes in it) should remain unless it has been torched off (image from Prime Portal): Just trying to help...

Nicely done Lewis, I like the dusty look of the finish and the way you've attempted the incline of the base. As others have said the straps are a bit overscale and a few small errors, but good job on the optics.

A nice looking model for sure! I agree about the stowage strap width being too thick. If anyones really bothered about accuracy as well then 'Armor Ghetto' didnt have the rear bustle rack extension fitted in reality.

Wasn't Armor Ghetto destroyed by a massive IED back in 2004 with the loss of most of her crew? John

Yes, Armor Ghetto was destroyed by an IED. Pictures are on Prime Portal's M1 Abrams Damaged in Iraq. I'm not sure of the date, but I believe it was late 2004 or Winter/Spring of 2005, since I saw it on a HETT at Camp ARIFJAN in Kuwait while I was deployed there for OIF 3. I understand it was detroyed by an IED made up of two 500 lbs bombs. If I have any of this wrong, someone please correct me... May the fallen crew rest in peace.
