Transport Models - Preston

Preston, Lancashire boasts one of the best modelling shops in the UK in the form of Transport Models. In these days of Local Hobby stores giving way to the out of town Mega Craft store, it's good to see a thriving shop that specializes in plastic static kits.

Transport Models of Preston
Transport Models, based at the old Oyston Mill off Strand Road, Preston, is deceptively small on the outside, yet is spacious and light on the inside. The shop also has its own off street parking for customers. On entering you encounter a large foyer where display cabinets are full of examples of models and a large railway set up to whet your appetite. Then it's through to the main sales area.
It's bright, and extremely well laid out. There is plenty of room to move around and inspect the large displays of static models on the shelves, everything from aircraft to armour, and including all the well known manufacturers such as Dragon and Tamiya, with the odd kit thrown in from less well known names.
As you can see from the photographs, the shop boasts a well stocked book display, along with tools, paints and scenic materials. The staff were really friendly, although the owner, Mark Houlding was a little camera shy, he did persuade two of his helpful staff to be photographed, in particular Phil (the 'hairy' one!). Although the shop does have a large railway and die-cast department, the plastic kit area is huge, and there was a really good selection to choose from. This shop has been open at these premises for about 4 years, but has been trading for about 11. Within the last couple of years they opened a branch in Southport, but reluctantly had to close recently due to being unable to appoint appropriate staff in that area.
I have to say I enjoyed visiting this shop, and if you're in the area, you probably would too. I was a little disappointed at the lack of any aftermarket stock such as 1/35th figures or Photo-etched sets, but they will order most things if asked.
Well worth a visit!

i used to use the southport branch of transport models and found it a treasure trove of models and supplies and the staff most helpfull but the branch in question closed without any warning as i found out to my cost when i travelled to it only to find it closed after checking on there website it was still open so at the moment they are not in my good books , i just wish they had notified or changed there website so i would not have wasted my time, instead i would have gone to liverpool but i wanted to support a localish shop

They have a notice on their website about the Southport branch, and there was a notice displayed in their Southport branch for quite some time. I even mention it in the feature. Vinnie

This thread sorta got me thinking if it would be a good idea to have a section on the site to review model shops all round the world? This would create free publicity for all the shops that our members frequent. Just a thought anyway.

Er...............that's what this is. Vinnie

LOL :-) apologies as i should have made it clearer, i meant making a section similar to the "/review" section we have here but instead focus mainly on all shops around the world. So if i knew i was headed to the UK and wanted to find out the good model shops there, instead of searching through the forum threads, i could see it in a summarised view similar to the book reviews.

:-) That's the plan! What we want is people to submit reports on their LHS via the Support Centre. Before we make a catagory specially for them we thought we'd show the sort of thing we're after, and we hope members will submit reports for publication! Vinnie

That's my kind of shop. This is the kind of shop I can spend hours in. Need I say, my wife hates this kind of shop. Even though I may never visit this shop, I really enjoy seeing pictures of it.
